Focus on Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a surprisingly common hormonal  disorder affecting 5-10% of women of childbearing age. PCOS is the most significant cause of infertility amongst women of all nationalities. If you have any of the following concerns, it is important that you are assessed for PCOS:

Gynecological

  • Irregular menstrual cycle, particularly infrequent or absent menstrual cycles

  • Polycystic ovaries (determined on ultrasound)

  • Infertility or recurring miscarriages

  • Elevated testosterone levels on blood tests

Skin and Hair

  • Excessive dark, coarse hair growth on body or face

  • Hair loss with receding hair line and widening of the central hair part

  • Acne or dark skin patch developments (acanthosis nigricans)

Metabolic

  • Excess weight, especially in the abdominal region

  • Elevated blood sugar levels

It is important to note that the symptoms of PCOS are very variable and all the symptoms may not be present in any one individual. However if you have an of these signs, it’s important to get a proper physician assessment as PCOS can increase the likelihood of some potentially serious health consequences.

The good news is that our AOR Supplement Ovarian Health can along with other diet and lifestyle changes, significantly improve your symptoms and reduce the risks associated with PCOS. Talk to your doctor or contact our partner practice Family Medicine Center for a consultation and further evaluation.
