Sub-Lingual Laser Therapy at Luminnova Health
This safe, non-invasive therapy harnesses the healing power of therapeutic laser and directs it through the entire bloodstream for a multi-organ effect.
Sub-lingual laser is a quick, painless treatment that is completed within 10-15 minutes on average. It employs fiber optic laser channels emitting specific wavelengths of visible light which are directed at the large blood vessels under the tongue. Sub-lingual laser therapy is entirely safe and involves no ionizing radiation. Sub-lingual laser therapy was developed as a non-invasive alternative to intra-vascular laser therapy.
The advantage of the sub-lingual route is that there is a VERY rich blood supply close to the surface. This anatomical feature is often exploited to facilitate rapid absorption and onset of action for certain drugs. From a laser therapy point of view, the sub-lingual route is also ideal because the absence of melanin here dramatically increases the amount of laser light absorbed compared to the skin.
Research
Evidence of the efficacy of SLLT was demonstrated in a study on a very stubborn, challenging group of conditions referred to as juvenile arthritis. Three groups were compared: standard medical therapy alone, SLLT plus standard medical therapy and standard medical therapy plus placebo (inactive treatment). Over the course of 3 months, the two groups that received standard medical therapy showed just over 60% improvement, whereas the group with active SLLT showed almost 90% improvement. This is a great example of innovative therapy being used to enhance rather than replace standard medical treatment.
In practice, sub-lingual laser therapy can be used to improve well being in a number of chronic health conditions and is also very helpful for those receiving chemotherapy to reduce fatigue and improve quality of life.
photodynamic/PHOTOBIOMODULATION Therapy
Another powerful application of SLLT is targeting infections when administered as a systemic light source for photobiomodulation and/or photodynamic therapy. Photodynamic therapy directly destroys infectious agents, even resistant strains. Photobiomodulation (PBM) optimizes the body’s response by modulating the immune response to infection.
This approach is increasingly needed as we encounter an increasing number of resistant bacterial infections. Furthermore, sublingual laser PDT/PBM can be used to target fungal and viral infections as well. Sub-Lingual Laser PDT is quick, painless and safe in-office procedure. It can be used to treat influenza, the common cold and other viruses, including CoVID-19. The Skin Centre, our partner practice, also utilizes it for stubborn nail fungus infections (see PDT for Infection).
